Engineering a Pathway from Education to Employment in the

Middle East and North Africa (MENA)

Goal:

Provide a fellowship experience to enhance the skills and knowledge of professionals who are actively involved in the teaching, guidance and mentoring of youth in order for them to be better equipped to guide them on a pathway to employment and for the youth to become responsible and contributing members of society. 

 

 

Overview:

The main elements of the program include:
• A four (4) week fellowship which will include the opportunity to learn from organizations that have implemented successful models for addressing the challenges of reducing unemployment. The organizations selected will span the different stages of a person’s education and career, from secondary school to job re-training/career change (see figure below).

  • Three weeks will be in Dearborn, Michigan and one week will take place in Washington D.C.
  • • Two sessions (April/May and October/November 2011)
  • Four participants from each country in each session (a total of 8 from each country).
  • Participants will be required to develop and present an action plan on how to apply their experiences to their own organization and home country.
  • • A follow-up event will be held in the MENA region after each session (total of 2) to promote mutual understanding and expand the partnerships between key professional groups in the United States and their counterparts in MENA countries,

 

Applicants:

The program will focus specifically on men and women who are directly involved with: career planning and placement services at the secondary school and university levels; vocational training and other forms of continuing education; community services to the unemployed; mentoring to young people seeking to develop more marketable skills and advance their careers; and setting or implementing policies that influence career opportunities. To be eligible to participate in this program, you must be:

    • Fluent in English
    • From one of the following eligible countries: Algeria, Egypt, Morocco, Palestinian Authority
    • Directly involved in mentoring/guiding people on career decisions or be involved in setting or implementing policies that influence educational and career opportunities.

     

Expenses Paid:

UM-Dearborn will pay for participant travel, food, lodging and local transportation

 

Location:

Dearborn, Michigan (3 weeks) – participants will be lodged in a local hotel
UM-Dearborn campus (1 day a week) – career opportunities, technical education, operations
Local industry/Organizations (4 days a week) – technical education, operations
Dearborn community (evenings/weekends) – networking with business leaders, cultural events
Washington D.C. (1 week) – Department of State program and cultural events
